Industrial Wastewater Treatment
Membrane Bioreactor (MBR) System for a Macadamia Processing Facility | Nelspruit, Mpumalanga, South Africa
PROJECT SUMMARY
Greenchain Group designed and delivered a custom Membrane Bioreactor (MBR) wastewater treatment system for a macadamia processing facility in Nelspruit, South Africa.
The treatment plant was developed to manage a combined industrial process wastewater and domestic sewerage stream, producing high-quality treated effluent suitable for potential non-potable reuse while supporting environmental compliance and long-term operational sustainability.
The compact, fully automated system combines advanced biological treatment with membrane filtration, intelligent process control and online monitoring to provide reliable performance despite variations in wastewater quality associated with seasonal food processing operations.
THE CHALLENGE
Food processing facilities generate wastewater that varies significantly in flow and composition throughout the production cycle. Organic loading, suspended solids and nutrient concentrations can fluctuate considerably, placing pressure on conventional wastewater treatment systems and increasing the risk of non-compliant discharge.
The client required a robust treatment solution capable of managing both industrial wastewater from macadamia processing and domestic sewerage within a single integrated system.
In addition to achieving consistent treatment performance, the solution needed to minimise operational footprint, simplify plant operation and produce treated water of a quality suitable for future reuse opportunities.
THE SOLUTION
Greenchain Group designed a fully integrated Membrane Bioreactor (MBR) treatment plant using proprietary process design and intelligent automation.
Incoming wastewater first passes through coarse and fine screening before entering a balancing tank that stabilises flow and influent quality. The biological treatment process then progresses through anaerobic, anoxic and aerobic treatment stages, allowing naturally occurring microorganisms to remove organic matter, nutrients and contaminants efficiently.
A submerged membrane system provides final solid-liquid separation, producing high-quality treated effluent while completely retaining biomass within the biological process. Automated dissolved oxygen control, chemical dosing and membrane cleaning optimise biological performance and maximise membrane life.
The treatment system also incorporates sludge thickening, dewatering and automated process control, together with Greenchain Group’s proprietary PLC, HMI and remote monitoring platform, allowing continuous performance monitoring and proactive operational support.

Business Impact
For food processing facilities, wastewater management is far more than a compliance requirement. An effective treatment system protects production continuity, supports sustainability objectives and creates opportunities to recover value from treated water.
By combining advanced biological treatment with membrane technology, Greenchain Group delivered a wastewater solution capable of adapting to changing production conditions while consistently producing high-quality treated effluent.
The compact design, intelligent automation and remote monitoring capabilities reduce operational complexity and support efficient long-term plant management. At the same time, the quality of the treated water provides future flexibility for water reuse initiatives, helping businesses reduce environmental impact while strengthening water resilience.
The project demonstrates Greenchain Group’s ability to design advanced industrial wastewater treatment systems that combine proven biological processes with intelligent engineering to support both operational performance and sustainable water management.
