How does Membrane Bioreactor (MBR) work?

Membrane Bioreactor (MBR) is a type of biological wastewater treatment system utilizing membrane technology as the final clarifier. Initially, microorganisms are introduced into the wastewater, breaking down organic matter and contaminants. Biological treatment is followed up by Microfiltration (MF) or Ultrafiltration (UF) membrane filtration. MF and UF membranes contain small pores that act as a physical barrier to reject solids and microorganisms larger than the pore size.  Hydraulic crossflow is implemented to prevent membrane fouling.

The treated water, known as permeate or effluent, passes through the membrane pores, offering high-quality water with reduced solids and contaminants. The remaining solids are collected in a concentrated sludge stream, which can be returned to the bioreactor or further processed. Recirculation of a portion of the treated water enhances the efficiency of biological treatment. MBRs are prized for their compact design, excellent water quality, and adaptability in various wastewater treatment applications.
