Industrial Water Reuse

Ultrafiltration Reuse System | Tshabong, Botswana

PROJECT SUMMARY

Greenchain Group designed and delivered a containerised industrial water treatment system for an abattoir in Tshabong, Botswana. The project was developed to reclaim and reuse treated wastewater within the facility, reducing freshwater demand while supporting more sustainable water management practices.

The ultrafiltration (UF) water reuse system produces up to 5,000 litres per hour of reclaimed process water, which is further treated through reverse osmosis (RO) before being reused within the operation. By transforming wastewater into a valuable resource, the facility has strengthened its water security and improved overall water-use efficiency in a region where access to reliable water supplies remains a significant challenge.

THE CHALLENGE

Water availability is a growing concern for many industrial and food processing operations across Southern Africa. In Tshabong, limited surface water resources and challenging groundwater conditions place increasing pressure on businesses that rely on consistent water supplies to maintain production.

The client required a wastewater treatment and water recovery solution capable of reducing freshwater consumption while maintaining the water quality standards necessary for operational reuse. The system also needed to integrate effectively with existing infrastructure and support the facility’s long-term sustainability objectives.

THE SOLUTION

Greenchain Group designed a purpose-built wastewater reclamation system centred around two DOW IntegraPac™ ultrafiltration membrane modules, combined with proprietary treatment and control technologies developed by Greenchain Group.

The membrane filtration system was engineered to recover high-quality water from the facility’s wastewater stream, producing up to 5,000 litres per hour of treated water suitable for further polishing through reverse osmosis. The resulting water is then returned to the facility for reuse, reducing reliance on external water sources and improving overall resource efficiency.

To simplify installation and commissioning, the water treatment plant was supplied in a containerised format and underwent comprehensive Factory Acceptance Testing (FAT) prior to deployment. The completed system was integrated into the client’s existing infrastructure, enabling reliable operation and seamless incorporation into the facility’s water management programme.

Key Outcomes

  • Reclaimed wastewater converted into a valuable operational water resource.

  • Production capacity of up to 5,000 litres per hour of treated water.

  • Reduced dependence on freshwater supplies in a water-constrained region.

  • Improved water-use efficiency and overall resource management.

  • Enhanced water security for ongoing operations.

  • Containerised design enabled efficient installation and commissioning.

  • Infrastructure aligned with the client’s long-term sustainability goals.

Technical Highlights

  • Containerised industrial water treatment and water reuse system.

  • Two DOW IntegraPac™ ultrafiltration membrane modules.

  • Design capacity of 5,000 LPH.

  • Advanced membrane filtration technology for wastewater reclamation.

  • Integration with downstream reverse osmosis treatment.

  • Factory Acceptance Tested prior to delivery and installation.

  • Proprietary Greenchain Group treatment and control technologies.

  • Engineered specifically for food processing and abattoir water treatment applications.

Business Impact

For food processing facilities operating in water-scarce regions, reliable access to water is essential for maintaining production and managing operational risk. By implementing a dedicated water reclamation and reuse system, the client is able to recover value from an existing wastewater stream while reducing demand on freshwater resources.

The project provides a practical and scalable approach to industrial water reuse, helping the facility improve water security, enhance operational resilience, and support responsible resource management. Through advanced ultrafiltration and reverse osmosis technology, the system delivers a dependable source of treated process water while contributing to the client’s broader sustainability objectives.
