Luxury Island Development
Containerised Reverse Osmosis System | Fregate Island, Seychelles
PROJECT SUMMARY
Greenchain Group designed and delivered a containerised reverse osmosis water treatment system for a luxury island development on Fregate Island in the Seychelles. The project was developed to provide a reliable source of safe, compliant drinking water from local groundwater sources that were affected by naturally occurring contaminants and environmental influences.
By combining advanced pre-treatment processes with reverse osmosis technology, the system provides a dependable supply of high-quality potable water while supporting the long-term water security requirements of a remote island operation.
THE CHALLENGE
Providing reliable drinking water infrastructure on remote island developments presents unique technical and operational challenges. On Fregate Island, the available groundwater source was impacted by elevated nitrate concentrations, hardness, sodium and chloride levels, alongside seasonal variations in water quality.
Environmental factors, including seabird activity and the island’s sensitive ecological conditions, contributed to fluctuations in raw water quality and periods of non-compliance with drinking water standards.
The client required a robust treatment solution capable of consistently producing safe drinking water while adapting to changing feedwater conditions and operating reliably in a remote location where resilience and ease of operation were essential.
THE SOLUTION
Greenchain Group designed a multi-stage water treatment process tailored to the island’s specific water chemistry and operational requirements.
The treatment train incorporates ozone disinfection, granular activated carbon filtration and reverse osmosis technology to remove nitrates, dissolved salts, hardness and other contaminants affecting water quality. The integrated pre-treatment processes protect the reverse osmosis membranes from fouling and performance degradation while improving overall treatment efficiency.
The entire system was supplied in a containerised configuration, simplifying transport, installation and commissioning while providing a compact and secure operating environment suitable for remote island conditions.
Automated monitoring and control systems were incorporated throughout the plant to provide operational visibility and allow the system to respond effectively to seasonal changes in source water quality.

Business Impact
For hospitality developments and remote destinations, water security is fundamental to operational continuity and guest experience. Dependence on imported water or unreliable local sources can introduce significant operational costs and risks.
By converting a challenging groundwater source into a dependable supply of drinking water, Greenchain Group enabled the client to establish greater independence from external water supply constraints while supporting the long-term sustainability of the development.
The project demonstrates how advanced membrane treatment technologies can unlock alternative water resources in remote locations, helping businesses strengthen resilience, improve operational certainty and invest confidently in future growth.
