Packhouse Water Optimisation

Ultrafiltration System Upgrade | Montagu, Western Cape, South Africa

PROJECT SUMMARY

Greenchain Group upgraded an ageing ultrafiltration water treatment system for a growing fruit packhouse operation in Montagu, South Africa. The project was undertaken to restore treatment performance, improve drinking water quality and increase production capacity to support continued expansion of the farming operation.

The upgraded ultrafiltration (UF) system delivers improved removal of colour, organic compounds and suspended contaminants while providing the additional treatment capacity required for future growth. The result is a more resilient and efficient water treatment process designed to support operational continuity during peak production periods.

THE CHALLENGE

As agricultural operations expand, water treatment infrastructure must evolve alongside production requirements. The client’s original first-generation ultrafiltration system had reached the limits of its design capacity following significant growth in the farming and packhouse operation.

The ageing system was experiencing declining performance, particularly in the removal of colour and organic material from the incoming water supply. Increasing demand placed additional strain on the treatment process, raising the risk of operational interruptions, increased maintenance requirements and reduced effectiveness of downstream treatment equipment.

The client required a solution capable of restoring treatment performance while providing sufficient capacity to support future operational growth.

THE SOLUTION

Greenchain Group designed and implemented a modern ultrafiltration system upgrade tailored to the operational requirements of the facility and anticipated future demand.

The high-performance membrane filtration system was engineered to accommodate increased flow rates while improving removal efficiencies for colour, organic compounds and suspended contaminants at source. By addressing these contaminants earlier in the treatment process, the upgraded system reduces loading on downstream equipment and improves the overall efficiency of the water treatment train.

The project also incorporated remote monitoring capability, allowing operational performance to be monitored proactively and supporting faster response to changing site conditions.

Greenchain Group continues to provide ongoing support, monitoring and scheduled servicing to ensure reliable long-term operation and consistent water quality performance.

Business Impact

For packhouses and agricultural operations, reliable water treatment infrastructure is essential for maintaining production continuity, meeting quality standards and supporting business growth.

By upgrading the existing ultrafiltration system, Greenchain Group enabled the client to increase treatment capacity without compromising water quality performance. The improved treatment process reduces operational risk, lowers maintenance requirements and provides greater confidence during periods of peak production demand.

The project provides a scalable water treatment platform capable of supporting future expansion while improving operational efficiency and protecting downstream infrastructure investment.
