Surface Water Treatment
Drinking Water Treatment System | Cape Winelands, Western Cape, South Africa
PROJECT SUMMARY
Greenchain Group designed and delivered a customised surface water treatment system for an agricultural and residential development in the Cape Winelands, South Africa. The project was developed to convert variable-quality dam water into a reliable and compliant drinking water supply for both operational and domestic use.
By combining conventional clarification processes with advanced membrane treatment technology, the system provides consistent drinking water quality throughout the year despite significant seasonal fluctuations in raw water conditions.
THE CHALLENGE
Surface water sources such as dams can provide an effective and sustainable water supply for agricultural developments and residential communities. However, seasonal weather patterns, runoff events and biological activity often result in significant variations in water quality.
For this client, periods of elevated turbidity and discolouration during certain times of the year were affecting the reliability and consistency of the available water supply. These fluctuations created operational challenges and increased the complexity of maintaining drinking water standards across both agricultural and residential applications.
The client required a treatment solution capable of adapting to changing source water conditions while consistently producing safe, compliant drinking water throughout the year.
THE SOLUTION
Greenchain Group developed a tailored multi-stage treatment process designed specifically for the site’s source water characteristics and operational requirements.
The treatment system combines flocculation and clarification processes with advanced membrane filtration technology to remove suspended solids, colour, organic material and fine particulates responsible for turbidity events. By removing contaminants early in the treatment process, the system is able to maintain stable downstream performance even during periods of deteriorating raw water quality.
Online monitoring and automated process control provide continuous visibility of treatment performance, enabling proactive system management and rapid response to changes in source water conditions.
The completed system is fully operational and continues to provide a dependable supply of treated drinking water for both agricultural operations and residential users on site.

Business Impact
For agricultural developments and mixed-use estates, access to a reliable drinking water supply is fundamental to operational continuity, resident wellbeing and long-term growth.
By transforming an inconsistent surface water source into a dependable supply of treated drinking water, Greenchain Group enabled the client to improve water security while reducing the operational uncertainty associated with seasonal water quality changes.
The project demonstrates how a carefully engineered combination of conventional treatment processes and advanced membrane technology can unlock the value of alternative water resources, supporting both resilience and sustainable resource management in water-constrained environments.
