Industrial Desalination

Containerised Seawater Desalination Plant | Walvis Bay, Namibia

PROJECT SUMMARY

Greenchain Group designed and delivered a containerised seawater desalination plant for an industrial facility in Walvis Bay, Namibia. The project was developed to provide a reliable freshwater supply for critical cooling infrastructure in an environment where no suitable freshwater source was available on site.

Using high-pressure reverse osmosis desalination technology, the system converts seawater into a dependable supply of process water for cold storage cooling operations, supporting business continuity and reducing dependence on external water supply infrastructure.

THE CHALLENGE

Industrial facilities operating in coastal environments often face a unique challenge: access to seawater but limited availability of freshwater suitable for operational use.

For this client, the absence of a freshwater source on site created a significant constraint for the facility’s cold storage cooling loops, which required a reliable and consistent supply of treated water to maintain operational performance.

The solution needed to operate reliably in a demanding coastal environment while providing sufficient treatment capacity, minimal operator intervention and the resilience required for critical industrial processes.

THE SOLUTION

Greenchain Group designed a fully automated, containerised seawater desalination system based on high-pressure reverse osmosis technology.

The turnkey desalination plant was engineered to convert seawater into high-quality freshwater suitable for industrial cooling applications, delivering a production capacity of 1,500 litres per hour. The packaged design incorporates automated controls, online monitoring and PLC-based process management to ensure stable operation and simplify day-to-day management requirements.

The containerised configuration allowed for rapid deployment and streamlined installation while providing a protected operating environment for the treatment equipment in challenging coastal conditions.

Business Impact

For industrial facilities, access to reliable process water is often directly linked to production continuity and operational performance. Where conventional water sources are unavailable or constrained, desalination can provide a practical and dependable alternative.

By converting seawater into a consistent freshwater supply, Greenchain Group enabled the client to establish long-term water security for critical cooling infrastructure without reliance on external supply networks.

The project demonstrates how modern desalination technology can unlock operational opportunities in water-constrained coastal environments, supporting business resilience, infrastructure reliability and future expansion.
